Small Garden Ideas: Square Foot Veggie Gardening

May 29, 2014

How to Grow Your Own Vegetables

Square foot veggie gardening is the perfect way to successfully grow  a patch of vegetables for your kitchen. It’s a great gardening idea because it’s cheap, compact, productive and perfect for a small garden. Your vegetables will thrive in a raised planter box with nutrient rich soil in a sunny position. Here’s how to do it and what you will need;

4 untreated wooden boards  4 feet (1.23m) long, 10 inches (0.25m) wide and 2 inches (0.05m) thick. 8 x 6 inch (0.152m) wood screws, 8 x 3 inch (0.076m) wood screws, a pack of nylon twisted line and assorted vegetable seeds to plant. Growing medium consisting of 1 cubic ft (0.03 cubic meters) equal parts blended compost, peat moss and coarse vermiculite and a 10 inch (0.254m) x 10 inch piece of bidum

Fix the the boards together by screwing two 3inch screws into each corner making a square. Place the boards on top of the spread out bidum in a sunny spot in the garden and fill with the growing medium. Using the nylons string lay a 4 x 4 grid over the surface of the box to make 16 squares, fasten the string to the sides of the boards with the 8 three inch screws.

Now sow a single variety of vegetable seed per square in accordance with the seed package directions. Water daily, water new shoots with Luke warm water. Your veggies will be ready to harvest in 40 to 60 days…

ENJOY! If you have any questions or comments, please post them below. We hope you love your new personal veggie garden.
