Small Garden Ideas: Must Have Series – Edible gardens

June 23, 2014

Edible Garden Landscaping Design

One of the most rewarding aspects to gardening is growing your own veggies, fruits and herbs.  Home grown produce is always tastier, cheaper, healthier and adds charm to your landscape picture, it is also easily done in small gardens.

There are three main factors which determine the design and scale of a kitchen garden:

  1. Space
  2. Budget
  3. Time

You also need to be prepared to spend on keeping the garden productive and free of weeds, pests and diseases.

In Simbithi, the biggest concern for a kitchen garden is the wildlife that will love it too.  You will need to protect your produce from being eaten with lath fencing or a mesh covering where the birds, buck and monkeys will not be able to get at it.  If it’s not possible to plant an area in your garden you could install some planters in your courtyard and plant them with your seasonal favourites.

Just remember to consider in your garden design that a kitchen garden requires full sun and lots of watering. Stay tuned for more small garden ideas throughout the week. In the meantime, share some of your own small garden stories below or post questions regarding your garden or landscaping needs.

I’ve always wanted to have my own garden at home. Next year I am going to move to a new house and I am going to make my own garden there. Regards!
