GARDEN RESOLUTIONS – Where To Place Your Focus
It’s a brand new year and it’s time to get cracking on those New Year’s resolutions. We’ve put together a few garden resolutions to help as you decide where you are going to place your focus this year.
Maintain Your Garden More Regularly
This is something that many people struggle with, often as a result of hurried, busy lives. We completely understand this. The weeks are busy, and the weekends often busier, making it difficult to find time for garden maintenance. However, understanding the benefits of spending time outdoors and using the opportunity to get the whole family involved in a healthy task, can make it easier to commit to. If you really don’t have time, feel free to give us a call!
Plant “Eco”
You might decide to add some new plants to your garden this year. Did you know that there are many plants that will provide great benefit to and improve the environment, such as Spekboom, which helps to fight air pollution? Spekboom is almost a miracle plant that has the potential to reduce carbon emission massively if we all committed to planting even just a few. If you want to join the “Spekboom challenge” you can buy your Spekboom from us right here online!
Always consider indigenous plants first, as these thrive in their natural environment, and attract creatures that live in our climates and environments which contribute to a healthy eco-system.
Bring Your Garden Indoors
Whether it’s at home or at the office, adding plants and creating an indoor garden will do wonders for the people using the space. Not only will it look great, but it also adds a sense of calm to a home or office and helps generate clean air. Take a look at some green ways to spruce up your indoor office this year here.
Green on Green
Supersize your eco-friendly ‘green vibes’ in 2020. Make use of air-purifying plants both indoors and outdoors. Only buy indigenous plants for your garden, which goes a long way towards supporting the birdlife and wildlife.
Create a more organic garden. Ditch the use of plastic containers for planting (no more plastic – but be sure to recycle these!) and re-purpose some lovely old tin cans, terracotta pots, or old watering cans for containers. Better yet, make your own with a few pieces of wood, a hammer, and some nails! There are so many ways we can make our homes and gardens even greener, both in colour and sustainability.
Owner-invested Gardens
Having worked on hundreds of gardens in our time, we find that the gardens that really thrive are the ones where the owners are invested. Taking time to water your plants, tidy up your garden, care for flowers and just enjoy spending time in your garden does a long way towards maintaining it. We really hope to see more homeowners investing in their gardens this year!
Rainwater Harvesting
A really GREAT garden resolution is to start rainwater harvesting, which is quite simply the collection of rainwater for use elsewhere. One of the common forms of rainwater harvesting is to collect the water from the roof of a building into a storage water tank – don’t let that precious water escape!
There are many benefits to rainwater harvesting. Here are just a few
-
As source water, it is naturally chemical-free with little chance for contamination other than the roof it falls on
-
Use of the harvested water alleviates the use of dam water storage thereby alleviating the stress on this infrastructure
-
It also places less stress on the stormwater draining system, reducing the risk of overload and thus also reducing the damage from floodwater.
-
It reduces soil erosion – less water running into the garden means less soil erosion
-
Naturally, free water falling from the sky means a reduced water bill every month. The cost savings benefit of 200,000 free water per annum is significant
